One of many that came west only to succumb to disease while crossing the Isthmus of Panama. William took sick and lingered on the banks of the Chagres River outside Gorgona.

His oldest son Aaron Archibald Ferguson crafted his coffin from a shipping crate. The coffin had to be extra long as William Ferguson was referred to as being nearly 7 feet tall, suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and other maladies caused by his height. He got his wife Marsoleet Le Fevre Ferguson to promise not to abandon their quest for California.
