ELWOOD — Harold "Had" Groover, 89, of Elwood, died Feb. 19, 2007, at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood.

He was born March 30, 1917, in Elwood, the son of Elmer and Molly (Louden) Groover. He married Margaret Knick on May 5, 1939. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps 22nd Raiders, 6th Division during World War II. He received the Purple Heart at Okinawa and presidential unit citation from President Harry Truman.

He was retired from Delco Remy after 36 years of service.

He coached Little League, Babe Ruth and other softball teams. He loved sporting events.

He was a member of the Elwood Veterans of Foreign Wars, Eagles, American Legion and the East Main Street Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Knick) Groover of Elwood; two daughters, Linda and Bob Fogle of Winamac, and Carole and Max Harper of Leesburg, Ga.; one son, Rick and Cindy Groover of Elwood; six granddaughters, Lori Bearden, Shelly Melvin, Lisa Harper, Kerry Beecher, Amy Walden, Leslie Groover; nine great-grandchildren, Megan and Thomas Melvin, Justin Harper, Jesse Bearden, Steven Rose, Maggie Beecher, Brady Walden, Delaney Walden and Hannah Beecher; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Pauline Scott, Edna Scott and Goldie Browning; and a brother, Estele Knick.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Dunnichay Funeral Home in Elwood, with the Rev. Roger Gardner of East Main Street Christian Church and Rich Leavell officiating. Burial will be in the Elwood City Cemetery, with the Elwood VFW conducting military honor guard services.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
