Philip Munger, 13, Maple View suffered severe burns which ultimately caused his death, Sunday night at about 7:30. He threw a match in the hole of a barrel which contained tar. The tar caught fire and covered the young man with a shower of blazing mixture.

The accident occurred nearly in front of the Munger home, on the Syracuse-Watertown road now in the process of being rebuilt.

As soon as the tragedy was discovered attempts were made to smother the flames He was then rushed to Oswego Hospital where he died at 5 A.M. Monday.

He was born in Camillus on July 22, 1922 the son of William and the late Flora Wilson Munger.

Philip attended the Maple View grade school and was a member of the Sunday School of the Maple View Community church.

Surviving besides his father are 5 brothers, James of Warners, Allen, Donald, Earl and William Jr., all of Maple View, 3 sisters, Mrs. Edgar Wilmer, and Mrs Paul Bradish both of Mexico, and Mrs. Lawrence Richardson of Grafton Square.

Funeral services were conducted from the home yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. George Lietka, pastor of the Community church, officiating. Interment was in Union Settlement Cemetery.

The bearers, all former school mates of young Munger were Erwin and Myron Dimon, Raymond and Lawrence Harvey, Howard Potter and Floyd Cornwell.
