born 1821 -1823, depending on source. The obituary published in The Burlington Clipper (Burlington, Vermont) states he was born in 1821 in Richmond " his father being one of the first settlers of that village."

Proprietor of the Howard Hotel, where Co. A, Thirteenth Regiment Vermont Volunteers stayed in Burlington while the Company prepared to leave for service in the Civil War. "In remembrance of his kindness and as a token of friendship a handsome silver water service was presented to him which he treasured highly."
