Early Life: Helen was born May 29, 1929, in Ogden, Utah, the daughter of Louis William and Lillian Orilla Shaw Underwood. She grew up in Ogden during the years of the Great Depression and World War II. As with so many who lived in those difficult times, she developed notable attributes of self-reliance, hard work, and frugality. Such qualities served her well throughout her entire life and were a continuing example to her children and grandchildren.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: Helen married a United States Navy veteran, Reed Adams Hill, in the Salt Lake Temple on September 8, 1948. This was the beginning of 67 years of faithful devotion and service to her loving husband and family. Together, they followed Reed's career opportunities from Ogden, Utah, to New York and Boston, and then to San Jose, California, where they lived and served for 50 years.
❦ Helen had a passion for learning and valued education highly. She was always active in providing learning opportunities for her children. After four children came into the family, Helen resumed her own university studies and obtained a degree in education. She then became a 2nd grade teacher and in that role, she influenced for good, hundreds of young learners. When her fifth child was born, she returned home to focus on her family.
❦ Ever guiding her children's learning, she was grateful to see them all obtain university degrees as well. Attending graduations was one of her favorite activities. During her years out of the classroom, while raising children, she invited students into her home. Here, she shared her talent and love for music and taught many, many young people to play the piano. She loved her grand piano which, thanks to her wonderful talents, provided music in her home for decades. Her skills extended to the organ as well and she contributed the music to countless church services throughout most of her life.
❦ As a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served faithfully all her life in numerous callings fulfilled many duties as the wife of a bishop and stake president as well. She served for many years as a worker in the Oakland California Temple, faithfully driving the 100-mile round trip from San Jose, with her husband at her side, to serve each week in the temple. Together, they also served three full-time missions to: the Family History Department at Church Headquarters, the England Birmingham Mission, and then finally, to the Nauvoo Temple. Her testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the service she rendered as a result, is exemplary. Helen Marie Underwood Hill passed away peacefully at her home in American Fork, Utah, on May 30, 2017. Just the day before, with family at her side, she had reached her 88th birthday. Her dearest birthday wish was to be reunited with her loving husband, Reed, who preceded her in death by 18 months.
Survived By: Her daughters: Shawna Conniff (Jeff) and Gaylene Powell (David); sons: Roger (Carrie), Terry (Marilyn) and Curtis (Irene); 29 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Preceded In Death By: Her husband, Reed; her parents; her brother, Bill (Betty); and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. The reunion occurring now is surely a sweet event!
