He was paroled nine days later, promising not to bear arms again against the Union. He died in a field hospital at Vicksburg, on July 15, 1863. It is likely he was buried in a temporary battlefield burial ground at Vicksburg before being reinterred along with 1,600 others at Vicksburg's Cedar Hill Cemetery --- in a mass, unmarked grave in the C.S.A. section.

Martin from Platte County, Missouri, documented by the" St. Louis Republic" in the March 31st 1895 issue, died on July 15, 1863 in a field hospital in Vicksburg, Mississippi after fighting in the Battle of Vicksburg, served as a Private in the Civil War in the 6th Missouri Infantry Regiment, under Col. Eugene Erwin (Consolidated with 2nd Regiment), which served under the 1st Missouri Light Artillery, Capt. William Wade; Capt. Samuel Farrington; Capt. Richard Walsh (Consolidated with Landis' and Guibor's batteries after Vicksburg). ----There were Confederate troops serving out of Missouri who were also known as "THE MISSOURI STATE GUARD: 1861-1862". In the same company "H", 1st Missouri Confederate Cavalry
