Mr. Abbott was born in Passagula, Mo. A longshoreman, he retired from International Longshoreman's Association, Local (NU)970, in 1965 after 17 years.
Survivors include his wife, Zelda Pearl Layman Abbott; a stepdaughter, Zelda F.R. Lang of Virginia Beach; two sons, Hubert M. Abbott and Oscar L. Abbott, both of Suffolk; a sister, Glenda Bower of Troy, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Rosewood Memorial Park by the Rev. Larry O'Brien. The family will be at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, from 7 to 8 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
