Helen Barker Evans 1916 ~ 2006 Helen Barker Evans was born April 2, 1916 in Ogden, Utah to Desmond James Barker and Mary Cassidy Bybee. She passed away at home on Sept. 18, attended by family members. She was born into a loving family, raised a loving family, and is being reunited with a loving family. Always strong in spirit and character, she fought many health challenges in the course of her life. The eldest of three children, Helen graduated from Ogden High School with honors and attended Utah State University. The Great Depression impacted the family heavily and when her father became ill, she left school, and with her mother, provided for the family. She first worked for the Ogden City Schools and later moved to Salt Lake City where she was employed by financial institutions. She married W. Grant Evans in 1942 in the Salt Lake Temple and two children were born to them. She served in various positions in auxiliaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was called to the Primary General Board in 1951 where she served for 17 years; speaking, writing manuals, and traveling extensively. She and Grant appreciated each other's interests. She learned about tennis because he was involved in countless tournaments, conversely, he supported her in various artistic endeavors. Survived by: daughter, Kathleen Slagle and her three daughters: Kristin (Chad) Christensen, Jenny Jo (Blair) Tuttle, and Nannette (Ryan) Heath; Son, Scott Carlos (Joyce) Evans, and his children: Matthew Carlos Evans, Rebecca (Daniel) Greer, John Marcov (Carin) Evans, and Kathleen Evans; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and a brother, Desmond J. Barker, Jr. Preceded in death by her husband and a brother, John Bybee Barker. Viewing will be Friday, Sept 22nd from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Foothill 5th Ward, 1930 S. 2100 E., SLC, with a funeral service at 12:00 noon on Saturday at the same location. Friends may call from 11:00 to 11:40 a.m. prior to the service. Friends wishing to remember Helen may contribute to the LDS Humanitarian Aid Fund. Arrangements by SereniCare Funeral Directors.
