Richard "Dick" Lemons stopped at a spring at the foot of Wynne Mountain, he met Willie Vaughan, 13, and they were attracted to each other. Richard "Dick" Lemons married Willie Vaughan on 9 May 1869 at a fine wedding given by her parents. She was 15 years old.
During the days that followed, Willie Lemons was busy with spinning, weaving, making wood ash hominy or lye soap. She always found moments to look over the hill for the sight of the big bay horse and the tall handsome rider "Dick" Lemons, but she seldom saw him for duty also called him away.
