York L. Horton, age 80, Eidson, died Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center, Kingsport.
He was a native of Hancock County and was a retired teacher from the Hancock County School system. He served as a teacher at the Big Springs and Wake Forest Elementary schools. He retired as a teacher and principal from Kyles Ford Elementary School. He was a veteran of the European Theater of World War II, achieving rank of staff sergeant. As a Justice of the Peace, he served the court of Hancock County. He was for many years a member and deacon of the Independence Missionary Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Larkin and Maude Horton; a brother, Brian Horton; and a sister, Juanita Horton Fuller.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy Hurd Horton; a brother, Luke Horton, Eidson; two sons, Dennis Horton and wife Linda, Mt. Carmel, and Glenn Horton and wife Shirley, Surgoinsville; a daughter, Anita Austin and husband Clay, Blountville; three grandchildren, Kevin Horton, Surgoinsville, Amber Austin and Alison Austin, Blountville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at Broome Funeral Home, Rogersville, with Revs. Steve Holt and Clay Austin officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 p.m.
