The creed of the true saint is to make the most of life, and to make the best of it. Heaven gained a true saint in Michael S. Maloney, 73, Kokomo, who left this life at 5:19 p.m. on Friday, May 26, 2017, at Community Howard Regional Hospital in Kokomo surrounded by family and loved ones. He was born August 30, 1943, in Kokomo, to Robert and Lucille (Swisher) Maloney. On March 3, 1962, he married Pamela F. Schmitt, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Kokomo, and she survives. Together they celebrated 55 years of marriage this year.
Michael graduated from Fulton High School in 1961 and served in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1966. Mike served with the Alaskan Air Command stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska. He was also stationed in Texas, Scott Air Force Base in Illinois and served his nation proudly in Vietnam. He attended the University of Alaska and Indiana University of Kokomo, where he earned two associate degrees. He worked for Delco Electronics as a Preventative Maintenance Supervisor for 32 years before retiring in 1999. After his retirement, he worked as a Realtor for Re/Max Realty One with his wife and daughter, Shala, from 1999 to 2009.
Mike was an avid Notre Dame fan and held season football tickets for several years. He also enjoyed fishing and teaching his grandchildren to fish at his summer home at Nyona Lake, golfing with his fellow Knight of Columbus and friends in Florida, gardening, and traveling going on several cruises. More than anything, Mike enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus where he was a member of the 4th Degree, past Grand Knight and on the Columbia Board of Directors. He was also on the Board of Directors for Edgewater Pines in Seminole, Florida, and served as chairman of many committees of the Nyona Lake Fish & Game Association and a member of the American Legion.
Mike enjoyed life to its very fullest. He never met a stranger and had the very best "bear hugs." He had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. Mike certainly enjoyed his fishing trips with Pete Schmitt, Greg Clark, and Dave Schmitt going to Minnesota and Wisconsin. He thought of these men as his brothers and would often refer to the "in-laws" as the "out-laws". He adopted Pam's family as his own and each one was special in Mike's eyes.
Mike would want to thank everyone who came to see him at home, the hospital and rehab during his battle with cancer. He loved all the cards he received and the special notes. He fought hard and never asked the question "why me" during his battle. He would want to thank Dr. Lance Washington and Dr. John Salter, not only for their service, but for their true friendship. He referred to the nurses and assistants in the Community Oncology Center as his angels.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Robert Maloney, Kokomo; daughter, Shala (John) Glentzer, Kokomo; grandchildren, Michael Hill, Lyndsey Maloney, Caitlin Maloney, Brian Maloney, Jenna Glentzer, Jackson Glentzer and Jacob Glentzer; great-grandchildren, Zaighn Hill, Brody Hill, Harper Hill, Adryan Maloney and Sophia Maloney; half-sister, Kathleen Glass, Kokomo; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert (Carol) Schmitt, David "Bubba" (Debra) Schmitt, Luann (Paul) King, Mary Jo Schmitt, James "Pete" (Marta) Schmitt and Barbara (Maloney) Clavio. Mike is survived also by several God-children, nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 2, 2017, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1229 N. Washington, Kokomo, with Father David Hasser the celebrant. Burial will follow in Kokomo Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors by the Kokomo VFW Military Rites Team and the United States Air Force. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 3 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 1, with the rosary being said at 7:30, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Rd., Kokomo.
