Captain William Peterson Cherry, born in Hamilton County Tennessee, 12 March 1826, the 8th child of Benjamin Franklin and Charlotte Walker Cherry, he died May 6, 1900, in Estill Springs, Franklin County, Tn. Before and after the Civil War, he served as a Baptist Minister and Superintendent of Schools for Franklin and Coffee Counties. Prior to the conflict of the Civil War he strongly opposed secession from the Union, but relented to served as Captain of Company A, 44th Tennessee Inf., C.S.A. He married Amanda Melinda Lucinda Montgomery in l849. They had 9 children. His second marriage was to Amanda M. Stamps in l888. He was a man of strong religious beliefs and principles.
