James was the son of Hugh and Jane Neill Cochrane He was born in Westfield, Chautauqua County, New York and married to Sarah Elinor (Eleanor) Martin Cochrane. James built the largest cheese factory in Dodge County in the Spring of 1870. He was a farmer in Trenton Township, Dodge County, Wisconsin. He is buried in the Old Cemetery portion of the Beaver Dam City Cemetery Lot 18 B1 B. The first footstone in the foreground reads, FATHER, the second up to the left, MOTHER, and the third, TERRESSA.
