Brooklet, Georgia -Mr. Jesse Eugene “Dick” Baker, age 82, died Friday May 26, 2017, at his residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice and surrounded by his family. Dick was born and raised in Bulloch County, the son of the late Jesse Hinton Baker and Katie Thomson Baker. He was a 1954 graduate of Brooklet High School.
Dick Baker was a pillar of his community and was known for his dedication to hard work. He began his career as a brick layer and several years later began installing and pumping septic tanks and founded Baker Backhoe & Septic Tank Service in 1969. He later patented the rock bed drain line system in Bulloch County, also known as the “Baker Bed System”. Throughout the years, Dick and his family built their business to be one of the largest in southeast Georgia.
He will always be remembered for his work ethic and instilling that in his own children. Dick was one of a kind who never met a stranger and always had a story to tell. He was a devoted father, granddaddy and great granddaddy. His greatest joys in life were his family and being on a backhoe.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Susan Fordham; a brother, Don Baker; brothers-in-law, Ted Roach and Buie Miller and a son-in-law, Willie Bowen.
Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Kathy Pevey Baker of Brooklet; a daughter, Janell Bowen of Brooklet; five sons and three daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Susan Baker of Brooklet, Jesse and Tammy Baker of Clito, Jamie Baker of Portal, Jody Baker of Brooklet and Jerry and Jesse Baker of Brooklet; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Elyse “Bootsie” and Al Burnsed of Ridgeland, SC, Louise Miller of Stilson, Faye and Larry McGalliard of Statesboro and Nell and Bob Haranda of Statesboro; two brothers and sisters-in-law, William “Dock” and Joyce Baker of Pooler and Joel “Bubba” and Dale Baker of Brooklet; two step sisters, Sissy Grant and Marie Thigpen and a step brother, Randy Littleton; 23 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and seven great- great grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors on Monday from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2:00pm in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro. Interment will be in the Brooklet City Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Judd Street, John Lamar, Hunter Lamar, Nicky Gwinnett, Andrew Gwinett, Jeff Reddick and Brad Wiggins. Honorary Pallbearers will be Vinny Thompson and Durrell Thompson.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, Ga. 30459.
