He became a chemist in the Virginia State Department of Agriculture. He went on to be an analyst and chemical engineer in Savannah, Georgia before ascending to the Presidency of the University of the South. He was a Democrat, Mason, Episcopalian, and in in the Society of the Cincinnati. A brother of the Alpha Tau Omega, Phi Beta Kappa, and Omicron Delta Kappa.
