Virginia Beach - Judith K. McGuire, 80, died of cancer on May 22 at her home in Virginia Beach. She was born to Captain Henry T. Koonce, USN, and Dorothy Haight Koonce in Boston. Judy held a BS in Nursing from Catholic University, a BA from Rosemont College, and a Masters in Social Work from Norfolk State. She was an accomplished pianist who loved classical music and the arts as well as duplicate bridge, which she played at the Life Masters level.

She was a skilled yachtswoman who, with her husband Tom, explored Chesapeake Bay, the entire East Coast, as well as Florida and the Bahamas in their sail and power boats, wintering over on several occasions. She was always a student and read avidly. Judy was a loving wife and mother and a warm and faithful friend, ever charming and gracious. First as a nurse and later as a counselor she touched the lives of many. As a Navy wife and daughter, she lived many places in the U.S. and Europe, always active and interested in her new environs.

Judy is survived by her husband of 55 years, CAPT Thomas P. McGuire, USN (ret.), son Thomas F. McGuire, of Washington, DC, daughter Jeanne M. Walter, of Raleigh, NC; and three grandchildren, James, Matthew, and Charles Walter. Her younger sister, Jenifer Susan Koonce, died in 1968.

Visitation will be from 6:30p.m. to 8:30p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Rd in Virginia Beach on Thursday, May 25th. A graveside ceremony will be held at Albert G. Horton Veterans' Cemetery at 1 p.m. Friday, May 26th.
