Apparently a son of Simri R. "Sim" & Laura D. (BEDELL) MURPHEY.

The 1880 census of Militia District #688 (Talbotton District) in Talbot County, Georgia, shows (all birth dates Georgia): Simri R. MURPHEY (aged 34 years), a farmer, with wife Laura (28), keeping house; daughter Emmie (7), and Emmett (3).

"Death of a Little Boy. // Little Robert Emmett, five years old son of Mr. and Mrs. S. R. MURPHY, died at their residence in Talbotton at 5 o'clock p. m., Wednesday. About twenty days ago he was taken with typhoid fever which so drew on his life that his pure young spirit took its flight for a brighter world beyond the skies. He leaves behind a circle of weeping friends and a heart-broken mother and father, to whom their many friends tender their deepest sympathy in their bereavement which renders a happy home to desolate. // The remains were brought to this city for interment, and the funeral took place at 1:40 yesterday evening, from the depot. Rev. E. H. McGEHEE, of Talbotton, assisted by Rev. J. O. A. COOK, of this city, conducted the exercises, the following young gentlemen acting as pall bearers: C. A. LOVELACE, John C. COOK, John OWEN, Henry G. BEALL." [Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun newspaper, Friday, 28 OCT 1881, p. 4.]

The burial entry in the sexton's ledger book shows: Robert E. MURPHY (sic) was born in Georgia, died aged 4 years of typhoid fever, and was buried 27 OCT 1881 in Section 2, Lot 1147 as a non-resident of Columbus, Georgia. The sexton was Abraham ODOM.

This grave is evidently not identifiably marked. On the list of lot owners for Section 2, Lots 1146 and 1147 are both reported to be owned by G. BEDELL and L. S. WRIGHT. Lots 1147 1/2 & 1129 1/2 were owned by Mrs. Eliza BEDELL. These, along with 1147, make up Lot 128 in Section B of Dolores Autry's "Historic Linwood Cemetery" book (edited by Lea Dowd et al.), Volume 1. Others reported to be in city 2-1147, 1147 1/2 & 1129 1/2 include: Albert G. BEDELL (1824-1878), marked; Albina (BEDELL) JENNINGS, buried 02 JUL 1897 (aged 50 years); Eliza H. (BEDELL) BEDELL, buried 21 JAN 1900 (age not reported); Cornelia (BEDELL) ROBINSON, buried 05 JUL 1911 (aged 71 years); and Mary (BEDELL) THOMPSON (1850--1936), marked. Also marked in this lot is John R. BEDELL (no dates, CSA), who reportedly died 02 SEP 1864; the sexton's card file places this grave in city 2-1129, but that should be 1129 1/2. In addition to the three inscribed graves, Autry also reports in B-128 four adult-sized ledgers and one infant-sized ledgers, none of which have any identifying markings.

LeGrand S. WRIGHT family occupied 2-1146 (see Autry B-130). Phil T. SKOTZKY (buried 18 JAN 1900, aged 38 years) is reported to be in city 2-1129 1/2, but that's probably an error. The other members of this family are buried in 2-1095 (see Autry B-199).
