1899 - 1925
George was born May 3, 1899, in Virgin, Utah, a son of Thomas Franklin Maloney and Lucy Olive Lee Maloney. He is the brother of 11 known siblings: Thomas Franklin Jr., Mary Julia, Erastus, Richard, Lucy Olive, John Elisha, Margaret Leah, David, Joseph Smith, Reuben Daniel, and Raymond. The 1900 US Census shows George still living with his family in Virgin. By 1910 and 1920, the census records show him living as a patient of Utah State Hospital in Provo, Utah, where he resided since he was about eight years old. Specifically, his death certificate makes clear he was a patient for sixteen years, seven months, and two days. George Dewey Maloney passed from this life March 5, 1925, at Utah State Hospital in Provo. He was nearly 26 years old.
DC & Commitment Papers Info Prior to Research: George Dewey Maloney passed from this life at Utah State Hospital in Provo, Utah, on March 5, 1925. His death certificate states he was single, no family information (I was able to research and find his parents, rare among these special spirits), former resident of Virgin, Utah, had been a patient for almost 17 years.
Utah State Hospital Forgotten Patients Project: George was among 500+ patients of the Utah Territorial Insane Asylum (now known as Utah State Hospital) between 1886 and 1960, buried in the Provo City Cemetery, most in unmarked graves, given a pauper's burial, alone without recognition or ceremony. The Utah State Hospital Forgotten Patients Cemetery Project requested donations to create a monument with individual plaques to honor each of these precious spirits. Thankfully, it was completed and dedicated to them October 10, 2018, in Provo City Cemetery.
