Mel Harp Sr.

Melton Bernard "Mel" Harp Sr. of Lubbock, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, at the age of 93. He was born Oct. 23, 1913, in Dayton, Ark. to Mart Bee and Othella Harp. Mel married Mildred Lucille Pennington on Aug. 20, 1940, in Abbot, Ark., and they moved to Sweetwater in 1940.

Over the next 28 years, Mel, in partnership with his brother, I.L. "Pee Wee" Harp owned and operated Harp Yellow Cab, H&H Vending and The Mel Harp Company, a retailer of television and stereo equipment. Mel was also a Certified Life Underwriter for Great Southern Life Insurance Company. He was ordained as a deacon in the First Presbyterian Church, Sweetwater in 1952.

Very active in the civic life of Sweetwater, Mel was a member of the Sweetwater Jaycees, Rotary Club, Chuck Wagon Gang, Quarterback Club, Mustang Band Boosters, the Chamber of Commerce and was a founding member of the Sweetwater Industrial Foundation. Mel served for a time on the Board of City Development. Harp was named Sweetwater's Outstanding Young Man of 1948. He was a member of the Shrine and a 32nd Degree Mason.

A member of the Sweetwater Racing Club, Mel finished third at Lake Brownwood in the 1947 National Finals of the American Powerboat Association in class C-1. Professional outboard Runabout. He was instrumental in starting Sweetwater Little League and served for several years as its first president. Until the end of his life, he remained an enthusiastic fan of the SHS Mustang football team which he had served for a time as the team bus driver, and for many years as the team movie photographer.

In 1968, Mel moved to Lubbock where he first managed the vending operations for Bob Jordan Amusements and later managed Jack's Amusements, a distributor of coin-operated video games, until his retirement in his late '70s. Mel was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church.

Mel is survived by two sons, Mel Jr. and his wife, Marie Harp, of Lubbock, and Price and his wife, Jessie Harp, of Odessa; grandchildren, Grant Harp of Lubbock, Jennifer and her husband, Clay Rose, of Abilene, and Kimberly Harp of Odessa; great-grandsons, Kody and Colton Harp of Lubbock; a sister, Ina Jean and her husband, Odell Hudson, of Houston; brothers-in-law, the Rev. J. Elton and his wife, Retha Pennington, of Abbott, Ark., Blake and his wife, Betty Pennington, of Bella Vista, Ark., and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Resthaven Funeral Home. Graveside services will be conducted by the Rev. Robert M. Wert at Resthaven Memorial Park on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2007, at 11 a.m.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1701 North Beauregard St., Alexandria, VA 22311, or Alzheimer's Disease Education, 3601 4th St., RM 3A 116, Lubbock, TX 79430.
