He served with the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, as a Rifleman with Casual Company, Headquarters and Service Battalion stationed out of Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He was last employed as a Security Officer at the Mohegan Sun Casino before retiring. He was a member of the Community Baptist Church in Groton. He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Masten McDonough, whom he married on February 7, 1976; his parents, Arthur H McDonough, Sr and Abbie Hendricksen McDonough-Mattos (1920-2015); one brother, Earl McDonough; and two sisters, Patricia A McDonough Banks (1939-2013) and Fonda Joy McDonough McElhaney (1948-2010). He is survived by two sons; six daughters; two brothers; 10 grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at the Community Baptist Church in Groton, CT, followed by interment at Maplewood Cemetery in Norwich with military honors.
