"Fowler Ensign" newspaper, October 1916: Rancher Has Fatal Fall From A Wagon

While assisting his son-in-law, Jess Mendo[n]za, in hauling hay on the B.F. Burton ranch, just west of Fowler, it is thot that Jos Vincent slid with some hay from the back of the wagon feet first, falling in such a way as to cause almost immediate death. The son-in-law, who was driving, stated that he heard him fall, and as soon as he could stop the team and get to the injured man, the latter could only nod his head to indicate that he was hurt. Dr. Morrison was at once summoned and responded immediately, but before he arrived life was extinct. The dead man was brot at once to his late home, his death being a terrible shock to the family, which consists of a wife, Mary Vincent, and nine children, Mrs. Wm. Jason of Byron, Mrs. J. Mendonza, Joseph, who is in the U.S. army in Honolulu, Louise, Tacy, Mary, Ida, George and John, all at home.

Mrs. Vincent's sister, Mrs. Salco of Delano, was summoned.

At the inquest conducted by Coroner Bean Tuesday morning, the jury rendered a verdict of accidental death due to a fall from a load of hay.

Jose Vincent was 67 years of age, had been in the United States 47 years, and in Fowler for the past 16 years.

The funeral cortege will leave the late home at the corner of Vine and Fifth Sts. tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock for Selma Catholic church, where mass will be celebrated for the repose of the soul. Internment will be in Selma cemetery.
