Peg (Margaret) Louise (Griebel) Benson

Peg (Margaret) Louise (Griebel) Benson, age 91, died Monday, May 15, at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Peg was born on Aug. 31, 1925, in Altoona, Pa., to Augustine and Rosana Kruez Griebel. As a child, she was known as a “tomboy” who consistently refused dresses for knickers. As a young woman, she was known for her skill with a rifle and for sharp shooting rattle snakes from horseback. After becoming a registered nurse, Peg and her dear friend Rita Sorenson traveled the country by car in 1947 venturing to 45 of the lower 48 states.

In 1948, she met Donald R. Benson at a beach party in St. Petersburg, Fla. They were married the next year on Aug. 8, 1949, in Altoona, Pa., and then moved to Don’s hometown of Jamestown, N.Y.

Peg graduated Altoona Catholic High School and received her registered nursing degree at Mercy Hospital. She continued her nursing career at Jamestown General Hospital where, after working as a floor nurse, she spent the rest of her career in the Emergency Room as a trauma nurse. After her retirement from Jamestown General, she worked part-time at the Fenton Park Nursing Home. She travelled widely with her husband, Don, through Ireland, the U.S., Europe and the Middle East. Peg was never without a stack of books, an avid reader she always valued education, history and a good thriller.

Peg won the Volunteer of the Year Award from RSVP for her work in the community. She spent the majority of her time at the Present Adult Day Care Center, caring for seniors suffering from Alzheimer’s, the disease that would eventually take her life.

Peg was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Rex Benson, in 1994; her siblings: Rose Marie Burns, Virginia Thomas, and her brother Jack Griebel. She is survived by her son, Paul J. Benson (Kim Weborg-Benson), who live in Mayville, N.Y. She is also survived by two grandchildren: Hunter W. Benson (Sydney Benson) and Cassidy A. Benson (Alexander Grant), who both share her passion for living and lifelong learning.

Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 19, 2017, at Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home, 316 E. Fifth St., Jamestown. Fr. Dennis Mendes will conduct a the Rite of Committal with immediate family, Peg will be interred at the Myrtle Cemetery in Kennedy.
