He was a son of Hans and Anna Elsie (Micholson) Olson, both emigrants from Denmark. His father came over in 1850 when he was about 24yrs. old. His mother came over with her family in 1865 when she was about 18yrs. old. They married about 1870. Oley was one of eleven children, seven alive by the 1900 census. His widowed grandfather Jorgen Mickelson lived with his parents in the 1900 census in the Washington Township, by then the grandfather and his father were retired farmers.
Oley was a house carpenter in the Ames area when he married Ella Sorenson on 14 Oct 1908 in Des Moines. Later he took up farming. They had three children:
1. Edna May, b. 04 Sep 1907 in Ames
2. Ralph Harold, b. 15 Jul 1910 in Ames
3. Leo Edward, b. 17 Dec 1915 in Washington township, Story
