Longtime Scott Bar resident, Robert “Bob” Mitchell, passed away unexpectedly on November 6, 2016 at his home. He was 64 years old.

Bob was born to Eugene and Toma Mitchell in Artesia, California on January 11, 1952. In 1970, Bob moved to Scott Bar from Inglewood. He served in the United States Army from 1971 to 1977 as part of the Signal Corps in Germany and Alaska. He was very proud of his experience and time in the service, and he maintained lifelong friendships with many fellow servicemen.

Bob worked as a mechanic, repairing Volkswagen Transmissions, he spent time as a dispatcher for the Montague Police, worked in archaeology for the U.S. Forest Service, worked as an underground miner, operated a portable sawmill, and spent nearly 20 years as a letter carrier for the US Postal Service in Yreka. On top of everything Bob did, he was also a longtime board member of the Scott Bar Cemetery, and was very involved in the community of Scott Bar. He was the “go-to guy” for anything happening in the area, which made his interest in local history and local legacy a valuable resource. Bob enjoyed fishing and hunting, and was a Ham Radio operator in his spare time.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Thomas, in 2008, and his in-laws, Mary and Wendell Bussert. He is survived by his wife, Doreen of Happy Camp; children: Steven (Erica) Mitchell of Scott Bar and Ryan Mitchell of Happy Camp; a sister, Sharon Herrera of Lancaster; brothers, Richard of Yreka and James (Gae) Mitchell of Scott Bar; four grandchildren: Connor Mitchell, Peyton Veach, Emily Mitchell, and Gail Wilson; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at the Scott Bar Cemetery on Monday, November 14, 2016 at 1:00 p.m., with a reception to follow.
