This story appeared in the Reading Eagle Newspaper, August 13, 1896, page 5/6. As follows.
"Twenty -three years ago, Samuel Valentine was a tailor in Pottsville and was regarded as an exemplary citizen. One morning he bade his wife and infant daughter adieu and stepped from the house. That was the last his wife ever saw of him. A year after he wrote to her from someplace in the south. She sent him many letters in the succeeding 22 years, but if he received them, he never replied. On Wednesday, the wife received a telegram announcing his death. It occurred in Elkton, MD. the message stated. The letter was from a daughter by the first marriage who lives in Richmond. Mrs. Valentine was Miss Susan Shertel, who was the daughter of Adam Shertel, and at one time a borough treasurer."
