Mintie "Jewel" Pounds Weed, 95 years of age, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 29, 2013 of natural causes in Tulare, California. Born to Martin C. and Josephine Ross on November 2, 1917 in the community of Treat (Dover), Arkansas, she was one of 13 children. Her family moved to Oklahoma where she met and married Leonard Pounds (deceased) and had five precious children. Eventually moving their family to California they settled in Tulare. Jewel retired from a successful service station supply business she ran with her second husband of many years, Donald Weed Sr. (deceased). Heartbrokenly, Jewel was predeceased by her eldest son, Billy Gene Pounds Sr. in 2010 and her youngest son, Donald Ray Pounds Sr. on June 17, 2013; son-in-law Izzy Frangakis; and by five loved grandchildren. Jewel and her baby sister, Ethel Cagle, were the last surviving siblings. Sadly, Ethel died last Friday, June 21, 2013 at the age of 93. Jewel is survived by her children, Oman and Bettye Pounds of Tulare, Edna Sue and Herbert Gibson of Fresno and Marianne Frangakis of Visalia; two daughter-in-laws, Shirley Pounds of Whittier and Lois Pounds of Visalia; 10 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 17 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. Jewel enjoyed boasting she was matriarch to a five generation family. She enjoyed faith and fellowship with her church family and blessed by friends of many years. Viewing will be 12-4 pm, Thursday, July 4, 2013 at Peers Lorentzen Funeral Chapel. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at 1:30 pm, Friday, July 5, 2013 at Grace Missionary Baptist Church, 445 N. H St., Tulare. Her final resting place will be at Tulare District Cemetery, 900 E. Kern Ave., Tulare.
