The following notice published in the Thursday 11 May 1899 edition of The Quincy Daily Whig, page 6:

The death of Mrs. T. M. Smith occurred at 4:25 yesterday morning at the residence of her sister, Mrs. E. A. Albright, Third and Maine streets.
Mrs. Smith was a Miss Mattie VanArsdel, and had, for the past eleven years, made her home with her sister in this city. She was married a year ago in this city to Mr. Smith of Peoria, and went there to reside. She arrived here three weeks ago, with her infant child. The direct cause of death was lung trouble.
Mrs. Smith was a very popular young lady with a large circle of friends in this city. She was for a long time employed in the millinery department of Joseph Bros. & Davidson. She was a member of the ladies' class of the Turners [Turn Verein], and one of their most active workers.
Mrs. Smith leaves her husband, who is a train dispatcher at Peoria. Her parents and two brothers also reside in Peoria. She leaves five sisters: Mrs. Marshal Smith of Chicago; Mrs. J. B. Hamill of Xenla Ohio; Mrs. E. E. Allbright of Quincy; Mrs. J. A. Martins and Miss Carrie VanArsdel of Peoria.
The date of the funeral has not been decided upon. The family are waiting to hear from their friends at Peoria and Chicago.
