Death dates on stone are reversed, Samuel died in 1930 and Esta died in 1921.

Samuel W. Cowan was first married to Jennie Mathis, who was the mother of his two sons, Guy and Ora. Jennie unfortunately suffered a mental breakdown soon after the birth of her son Ora and was left in the County Home and Asylum in Fayette County, Iowa. Samuel divorced her and moved to South Dakota. He latterly remarried. His second wife was Estelline (maiden name unknown) b 1847, who appears as Esta on the same headstone as Samuel.
