E. Robert Alexander, 84, passed away peacefully at home on April 30, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Spokane, Washington, on August 12, 1932, to Earl and Amy Alexander. He attended Gonzaga Prep High School, St. Edward's Seminary and Eastern Washington University. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve after which he worked as a national bank examiner for 25 years, first in Spokane and Seattle before relocating to Portland in 1972. After retiring in 1988, he worked part-time for Wilkins Trucking as a bookkeeper.

In March of 1957, he married Janet Norton. Together they had five children. Janet passed away in January of 1993. In September of 1993, he married Jean Bertrand.

Alex's Catholic faith was very important in his life. He was a volunteer for St. Vincent's Hospital and Meals on Wheels. He loved his lake place at Lake Merwin Camper's Hide-a-Way where he served on the tree committee.

Alex was a wonderful father and grandfather and his children and grandchildren will be honored to carry his wisdom and guidance with them forever. His family is so grateful for the care he received from Providence Hospice and his children will never forget how tirelessly his wife, Jean, worked so he could stay at home until he passed.

Alex is survived by his loving wife, Jean; children, Judy Alexander (Jim Paynter) of Portland; Sandra Hubrich (Grant) of Hillsboro; Cindi Henning (Kevin) of Buxton; Jeffrey Alexander of Warren; and Robert Alexander of Portland; step-children, Randy Bertrand; Larry Bertrand (Kathy); Paul Bertrand (Suzanne); Gregg Bertrand (Julee); Scott Bertrand (Sara); and Debbie Thompson (Randy); 8 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 18 step-grandchildren, and 8 great-step-grandchildren; nephews, Tom Dwyer and Paul Dwyer of Spokane. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Alice Dwyer, and nephew, Dean Dwyer.

A memorial mass is scheduled for May 5, 2017, at 2:00 pm, at St. Juan Diego Parish, 5995 NW 178th Avenue, Portland, Oregon, 97229. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alex's memory to the American Cancer Society, https://www.cancer.org/involved/donate/memorial-giving.html.
