Funeral services for Mildred Katherine Patterson, age 84, of Lake Providence, LA will be 2 p.m. Friday, January 12, 2007 at Northside Church of Christ in Lake Providence, LA with V. W. Hayhurst officiating.

Burial will follow in the Providence Memorial Cemetery under direction of Cox Funeral Home of Lake Providence, LA.

Mrs. Patterson was born October 19, 1922 in Haile, LA and died January 10, 2007 at the East Carroll Parish Hospital in Lake Providence, LA.

Mrs. Patterson graduated from Marion High School. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Louisiana Tech in Ruston, LA with a degree in English Education. She earned a Master's Degree in Education from Mississippi Southern University in 1968. Mrs. Patterson was an educator for 33 years, in Lincoln, Caddo and East Carroll Parishes. She retired as Secondary School Supervisor and Director of Federal Programs from East Carroll Parish School System in 1984.

Mildred was a member of the Northside Church of Christ. She also belonged to the Moses Shelby Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Kappa Kappa Iota, an educators honor fraternity.

After retirement Mildred was active and served as President of the local AARP chapter. She was a volunteer at the Byerley House. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Louisiana State Cotton Museum and a board member for the local Council of Aging.

She participated in Senior Olympic Games winning three Spelling Bee competitions.

After Mildred suffered a debilitating stroke in 2005, she was lovingly cared for by Belle Heard, who was her companion and friend until Mildred's death. Belle will always be loved by Mildred's family. The family also acknowledges Mildred's neighbors, Lynn and Jim Thom and David Tschabold, who truly loved Mildred with thier thoughtful deeds.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Ray Patterson; her parents, Will and Nettie Edwards; a brother, William Edwards and a sister Louise Arrant.

Suvivors include a son, Edward Patterson of Baton Rouge, LA; a daughter Jane Frith and her husband Danny of Lake Providence, LA; a daughter Kathy Bradley and her husband Mike of Transylvania, LA; grandson, Garrett Frith of Lewisville, TX; grandson, Greg Frith and his wife Jenifer of Shreveport, LA; and a great grandchild, Ava Frith of Shreveport, LA.
