Joseph French served as a Private in Company F, 78th Illinois Infantry. He was born "About 1823" in Dandridge, Jefferson county, Tennessee.

He stood 5'7" tall, and had dark hair and blue eyes. He was married and working as a farmer in Coatsburg Illinois when he mustered into service 1 September 1862 in Quincy Illinois. He was joined to the military by Lt. Cannon.

Joseph French was mustered out of duty by Lt. Scroggs, 7 June 1865 in Washignton D. C.

James French of Omaha Nebraska was called here on account of the serious condition of his father, Joseph French.

COATSBURG, Jan. 6. -- Joseph French, an old settler of this place who emigrated from Tennessee to Coatsburg in 1840 and died Monday morning at the age of 86 years, 9 months and 10 days.

He was married to Katherine De Moss in 1847. He is survived by three sons and two daughters. James was the only one who attended the funeral, the others being too far away to come.

When the war broke out, he enlisted with the Seventy-Eighth Illinois Volunteers, and served throughout the war. The funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Jane Barlow, and the remains were taken to the village cemetery.
