Services for Richard Ellis Conner, III, 78, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., who died Tuesday, March 14, 1995, in Tuscaloosa, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 18, at First Presbyterian Church in Natchez with burial in the Natchez City Cemetery.

He was born Jan. 22, 1917 in Vicksburg, the son of the late Richard Ellis Conner, Jr. & Carolyne Williams Conner. He was a graduate of the University of Mississippi, with a degree in chemical engineering.

He was a veteran of World War, II and the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps and retired as a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force. He was also retired from his longtime position as an executive with Merrill Lynch.

A combat fighter pilot Ace, he served as commander of the 82nd Fighter Squadron in the 78th Fighter Group, 8th Air Force, based in Duxford, England, flying both P-47 Thunderbolts and P-51 Mustangs.

He was missing in action after being shot down on a mission over Germany. He escaped to Russia and was detained in Poland, Moscow & Cairo, before returning to combat. He was subsequently recognized as one of the first combat pilots to shoot down a German jet aircraft. For his valor he was decorated with the Air Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, French Croix de Guerre and the Bronze Loin of the Netherlands.

In retirement he was a member of the P-47 Thunderbolt Pilots Association and the Flying Class of 41-G.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Anne Ensminger.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Audley Britton Beltzhoover Conner, his children, Ruth Coy, Aylett Dickman, Richard Conner IV, Denison Graham, Anne Gaillard Conner & William Conner. Grandchildren: Thomas Dickman, Jr., James & Samuel Coy, Denise & Courtney Conner & Laura Graham.
