He enlisted on June 6, 1861 for 3 years and was mustered into Co. G. 6th Ohio Infantry at Camp Dennison, OH. They took part in the Battle of Shiloh where the regiment had 384 men present and suffered 125 casualties. Ambrose was discharged on May 12, 1862 due to disability.
On Sept 20, 1890 he received an Army Invalid Pension for his service in the Civil War and following his death his wife Matilda received an Army Widows Pension beginning on Sept 24, 1897.
In the 1890 Civil War Veterans Census of Toledo, OH he states the disability was defective hearing.
When he died on Sept 13, 1897 in Cook County, IL, his death certificate stated he was a 64 year old married pattern maker born in Ohio in 1833 and buried at Calvary Cemetery on Sept 15, 1897.
