He married Elizabeth Butterfield of Temple, on 3 Mar 1768 in New Ipswich, NH.

He committed suicide and was buried in the winter of 1803/4. On 17 Jan 1804, the administration of his estate was granted to his brother Maj. Ephraim Heald. Joseph held public office, Tythingman, in 1787 and Constable in 1789-90.
