On April 29, 2017, Etta Beagle Teusink, completed her earthly course and joins her beloved husband, Rev. Raymond John Teusink, awaiting the resurrection of the dead and return of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whom she served through all her life.
Etta was born the youngest of nine children into a close-knit, loving farm family in Michigan, where she enjoyed all the blessings of growing up with six elder brothers and two sisters. She earned a nursing degree (with honors) from Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan, (through the US Army Cadet Nursing Core) and met the love of her life, Ray Teusink, through his sister who was also a nurse. Their marriage and life-partnership put Ray through college and seminary in Holland, Michigan, and several decades of pastoring in South Dakota, Arizona, Yakima and Nebraska. Their marriage produced three grateful children: Tim, Mary and Stephen. Ray was clear in letting their children know that he had had the extremely good fortune to have “married up” in life and their mother was a woman to be respected and obeyed.
Etta’s small stature and gentle, sweet personality could be mistaken for weakness but anyone who knew her at all was quickly disabused of this erroneous impression. One incident from her long nursing career is illustrative—an ill-tempered surgeon once threw an instrument at her in anger in the operating room and was immediately ducking, as the instrument came flying back. Her nursing career made a lasting impression on her son, who became a physician and surgeon, learning early in life from his mother’s professionalism, love for people, and passion for caring, the truth that nurses are an indispensable part of the health care team.
In addition to the usual challenges of parenting intelligent, energetic and challenging children, Etta and Ray successfully raised their youngest, special-needs, yet independent son, Stephen, who has lived from three months of age with cerebral palsy, resulting from neurologic complications of chicken pox contracted as an infant. After graduating from Davis High School, Steve moved to Seattle, where he attended college, worked for the City of Seattle and served as a juror (three times). Daughter Mary recently retired from the Yakima School District and enjoys spending time with her husband, Nick, traveling to visit friends and family; son Tim and his wife have served as career medical/educational missionaries in Haïti, Rwanda, Ethiopia and now live in France as a base for teaching around the African Continent.
Etta is preceded by her parents, eight siblings and her husband of 44-1/2 years, for whom she lovingly cared for during the last decade of his life, as he suffered from progressive dementia. She is a 36-year survivor of metastatic breast cancer and although physically challenged during the last years of her life, always continued to encourage, minister to, and pray for those in need. During her last years, she received loving care at Landmark Care Center (she had previously worked as a nurse at its predecessor, Yakima Convalescent), where she continued to use her nursing skills in making sure she received the right medicines…at the right dosage…at the right time. Her children are very grateful to all the loving and dedicated staff at Landmark, who enabled Etta to live her final years in dignity, surrounded by love and respect. She participated in Bible studies at Landmark into the last week of her life.
Etta is lovingly survived by her children, Dr. Tim Teusink, who with his wife Muriel have two children, Jonathan & Rebekah; Mary Anderson, who with her husband Nick have three children, Aimee & Jamie Dolan, Erin & Tony Fortier, and Steve & Heather Anderson, and seven great-granddaughters: Madison, Vivian, Katelyn, Marygrace, Sophie, Olivia, and Eleanor; and her son, Steve.
Her long and loving life are a testament to God’s grace and mercy and are a cause for celebration and rejoicing. She will be remembered for her love, grace, humor and enthusiasm for life, all of which were grounded in her dynamic Christian faith.
Her Celebration of Life Service will be held at East Valley Reformed Church, Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 2:00 PM. Interment will be at the Holland Cemetery in Moxee, next to her husband.
