Jose E. Montano, age 85, a longtime resident of Las Vegas, N.M. passed away on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007, at the N.M. Behavioral Health Institute (Ponderosa I) following an extended illness.

He was born in Ojitos Frios on Oct. 19, 1921, to Filemon Montano and Elijia Barreras Montano.

He was united in marriage at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Las Vegas, N.M. on May 21, 1941 to Ciprianita Jaramillo.

He retired from the West Las Vegas Headstart where he was employed for 17 years as a Foster Grandparent. He enjoyed playing the violin, guitar and going on rides on his car.

A lifelong Catholic, he attended the Immaculate Conception Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Filemon and Elijia Montano; wife: Ciprianita Montano; son: Cifredo Montano in May 1979; great-granddaughter: Shantal Maestas; brothers: Eugenio Montano, Leroy Montano and Amado Montano.

He is survived by his son: Lorenzo Montano and friend Celia Lujan of Denver, Colo.; daughters: Priscilla Larson and husband John of Las Vegas, N.M., Maria Salazar and husband Gabriel and Lillian Montano all of Denver, Colo. and Christine Lopez and friend Ernest of Las Vegas, N.M.; 23 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; brothers: Leo Montano and wife Frances of Romeroville, N.M., Max Montano and wife Dora of Hobbs, N.M. and Adan Montano and wife Betty of Las Vegas, N.M.; sisters: Tillie Chavarria, Virginia Montour, Carmen Loera and Chavela Gallegos and husband Candelario all of Albuquerque; sister-in-law: Gregorita Griego of Las Vegas, N.M.; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Rosary devotional services will be conducted this evening at 7 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church with Father George V. Salazar as celebrant. Interment will follow at La Manga Cemetery with the following serving as casket bearers: Juan A. Gonzales, Marvin Montano, Fred Montano Jr., Steven Lovato, Manuel Madrid and Fred Montano.

Serving as honorary bearers will be the rest of his grandchildren.
