Samuel Norris, foreman at Eureka Mine.

Copper mining was prevalent around Ducktown, Tennessee (Polk County). During the Civil War, Polk County provided 90 percent of the Confederacy's copper: raw material for percussion caps and artillery projectiles. This made retention of the middle to eastern sections of Tennessee vital to the Confederacy's war making potential. The fertile land southeast of Nashville provided great quantities of food and animals to sustain the basic needs of General Braxton Bragg's Army of Tennessee. The mountains had numerous caves that provided significant amounts of niter (potassium nitrate), a critical ingredient in gunpowder. https://www.genealogy.com/ftm/h/a/s/William-B-Hastings/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-0830.html
