Her father was a farmer in the Deal's Mill area who by 1880 had lost an arm to amputation.
Mary Ann took up living as husband and wife with Ambose A. Hice, 20, about 1874. No marriage record is found. They made their living farming in the Little River township and raised 5 sons and 2 daughters without losing any in childhood.
Ambrose died in 1920. On 15 August 1922 Mary Ann, then 71, was involved in runaway mule incident in which she was thrown from a wagon and broke a leg and foot. From this she developed gangrene which lead to her death on 24 September.
