When John Stearns was born on January 24, 1657, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, his father, Charles, was 32 and his mother, Rebecca, was 21. He had 5 siblings: Shubael, Isaac, Charles Jr., Rebecca, and Martha.

He married Judith Lawrence and together they had 13 children; Rebecca, Judith, Sarah, George, Benjamin, John Jr, Thomas, Daniel, Isaac, Mary, Elizabeth, Abigail, and Charles. The birth of one child, Rebecca, the oldest was recorded in Watertown. His eldest five children were baptized June 22, 1690 by Reverend John Bailey of Watertown. The next seven children were baptized May 11, 1701 by Reverend Angier of the West or Second Church of Watertown. Reverend Angier also baptized the last born child February 28, 1703.

John's occupation was that of a House-Wright which in colonial days was a person who builds and repairs houses. Particulary a craftsman who cut timber in the quantity required to build a house, then sawed it into planks, and finally jointed and assembled them.

After the death of his first wife, John remarried to Mary Brooks Norcross on April 2, 1713, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He died on February 22, 1722, in Lexington, Massachusetts, at the age of 65. It is not known where he is laid to rest.
