4. John Chapman entered Rev. service as a volunteer militiaman in a ranger company commanded by Cpt.--Lt. Col. Robert Holmes of McDowell's Reg't. in 1780. He served 4 tours of duty under various commanders. He was in the battle of Gilford Courthouse (15 May 1781) and in the Wilmington Expedition of Sep-Dec 1781. In 1832 in Wilkes, Co., he applied for and received a Revolutionary War Pension (#W18895). His widow received his pension after his death. Revolutionary War Soldiers of Western NC.; Burke Co., Vol 1.
