Body of Mathias Lawton Now Rests in Palo Alto Cemetery

Long Struggle Against Cancer of Face Ended Last Wednesday Morning

Deceased was in 86th Year at Time of Death

Had been Resident of Jasper County Since 1864 – leaves Wife and Five Children

The funeral services connected with the burial of the late Mathias Lawton whose death occurred in this city Wednesday morning were held yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Palo Alton United Presbyterian Church, the Rev. R. F. Lavender of this city officiating. A large number of relatives and friends gathered at the church to pay their respects to the deceased.

Mr. Lawton came to Palo Alto Township in 1864. He first lived on what is known as the Anson Rees farm, five miles south of Newton. Later he secured the farm, one mile east of the Rees place and there he has lived ever since. This farm is a very valuable one and Mr. Lawton has been able thru hard work and good business management to amass a goodly portion of this world's goods.

He leaves a wife and five children-four daughters and one son. The daughters are as follows: Leila Prouty of Long Beach, California; Mary Soper of Washington; Clara, of Nevada; and Mrs. Dillie Gill of Kansas City. A son Leon could not be located. The two daughters, Leila and Mary were here for the funeral and have taken care of their father during the last few months of his life.

The pallbearers for the service yesterday were: B. W. and L. Blackwood, George and Chas. and William Charlesworth and Ashur Dunn. The music was furnished by a quartet composed of Merritt Charlesworth, Mrs. Ed Wilcox, George Shelley and Louisa Harlan, with Mrs. Belle Spain at the organ.

Mr. Lawton would have been eighty-six years of age had he lived until next Thursday, April 2nd.

Mathis Lawton

On March 26th he was laid to rest in the cemetery of Palo Alto Township this county one of its oldest and best known citizens, Mathias Lawton, who in a few days would have been eighty-six years old.

The direct cause of his death was a malignant cancerous growth on the left side of his face. Had it not been for this he probably would have lived many more years having shown marvelous physical vitality and having worked in the field on his farm the day before he went to the hospital the 30th of Dec. 1913.

He was born in Middlesburg, New York, April 2, 1828. He came to Jasper County in 1863 and with two yoke of oxen broke a good deal of the prairie in this township. The ordinary hardships, obstacles or sickness which put so __________________he had contempt for and they never hindered his work a minute.

For integrity and square dealing he had no superior and his word was always as if it were an affidavit in writing. He would always concede the advantage to the other man.

His land holdings proved good investments which he bought not for investments but to farm. He was a real producer not an investor. ~ Newspaper unknown.
