John King Sr., a cooper, came from a family that stood up for freedom of expression & religion. In 1637, John Sr.’s father, William King Sr. was one of 5 Salem residents disarmed when John Wheelwright and Anne Hutchinson were found guilty of Heresy. There is no proof that William Sr. was a follower of either. In 1659, John King Sr., was about 20 years old when his soon to be father-in-law, Thomas Goldthwaite was a Constable of Salem & his brother William Jr., was banished for refusing to deny that he was a Quaker. As a Constable, Goldthwaite was ordered to arrest several of those suspected of being Quakers, which included William King Jr.’s wife & friends. After a few arrests and/or attempted arrests, Goldthwaite resigned his post. During the Salem Witch Trials of the 1690’s, John King Sr.’s son, John Jr. was married to the daughter of Dorcas Hoare. John King Jr. & wife did everything possible for Dorcas during & after she was found guilty of witchcraft. Through all the above turmoil, John King Sr. was never found in association with any persecuted group, nor was he found among the persecutors. It is possible that he inspired freedom of expression & religion in his children for his daughter, Hannah King, married Benjamin Marsh, born 1687. Benjamin became one of the 1st Baptist Ministers in Massachusetts.
