Roger Edward Abbott, 96, of Greenville, passed away in the evening hours of Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family.

Mr. Abbott was born on June 16, 1913, in Josephine to Joe and Adnie Colman (sic) [family member says maiden name Coffman] Abbott. After high school he married Marie Payne and spent the next 67 years together until her passing in 2002; together had two children.

He retired from E-Systems where he worked as the lead man in the electrical shop.

Mr. Abbott loved life and farming. He was a skilled craftsman and a true southern gentleman who will be missed by all who knew him. He was also a longtime member of Dixon Baptist Church.

Roger is survived by two sons, Jack Douglas Abbott of Greenville, and Nathan Maloy Abbott and wife Barbara of Idalou; grandchildren Timmy and Shelly LaRock; great grandchildren, Jeffrey and Ashley LaRock and Amber and DJ Pendry; great-great grandchildren, Tara LaRock, Vince Pendry, and Emma Pendry; and one sister, Quebell Morris.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services for Mr. Abbott will be 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, 2009,at Dixon Baptist Church with Rodney Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Park Cemetery with John Gilmore, Jason Tanner, Bobby Pickle, Tim LaRock, Jeff LaRock, and Bob Fulton serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m..today at Peters Funeral Home.
