JOSEPH GATES, RETIRED FARMER, IS DEAD AT 87

DeGraff—Joseph Alexander Gates, 87, of DeGraff, a retired farmer, died at 2:30 a.m. today at the home of his son, Wilbur Gates in Kettlersville.

Death followed an illness of some time. He had been making his home with his son for the past three months.

Born in Pleasant township, Logan county, on Sept. 25, 1873, Mr. Gates was a son of William and Barbara Gates.

His marriage with Barbara Anne Burns took place in 1891. She died in 1936.

Survivors include four sons, Wilbur, with whom he was making his home; Omer Gates, Sidney; Harlan Gates, DeGraff, and Sherman Gates, Quincy, and two daughters, Mrs. Harry O. Chandler and Mrs. Helen Roach, both of DeGraff. Seven children have preceded him in death.

Also surviving are 34 grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday from the Rexer Funeral Home in DeGraff, with Rev. Gilbert Heaton of the Methodist church officiating. Burial will be made in Fairview Cemetery at Quincy.

Friends will be received at the funeral home at any time after 3 p.m. Sunday and on Monday until the funeral hour.
