Ethel Norrie Childs (nee Flewellen)

Ethel was born in Christchurch on June 23 1911. She was educated at St Albans Primary School and Christchurch West High School. After college she went to work in the office of lawyer C. S.Thomas. She was an excellent shorthand typist and became an expert in conveyancing.

On December 28 1936 she married Henry Arthur Childs and the couple went to live in Henry’s first parish in Tinwald. Over the next 12 years they had four sons: Michael, David, Roger and John. In 1939 Ethel and Henry moved to the West Coast where Henry was priest in charge of Hokitika and South Westland. 1945 saw the family shift to Geraldine. In all the parishes Ethel was very active in the work of the church, notably in the Mothers’ Union, the Women’s Guild and teaching Sunday School. She also entertained regularly at the vicarage.

In 1951 Henry was appointed as Vicar of Karori so the family moved to the North Island for the first time. Henry later became Dean of Napier Cathedral, in 1964. In both parishes, the combination of Henry's ministry and Ethel's hospitality and leadership in the women's organisations was very successful. The couple were very happy in the Hawke's Bay and made many friends, so they decided to retire in Napier.

Sadly Ethel developed a brain tumour and, after a long illness, she died in Napier in 1981. The huge turnout for her funeral at St John's Cathedral showed the esteem in which she was held. A stained glass window in the church entitled "Feed my sheep" is a lasting memorial to Ethel.

Ethel's ashes are in St John's Cathedral, Napier, and there is a memorial to Ethel at St Mary's, Karori.
