VEGA — Marvin Axe, 83, of Vega died Monday, April 24, 2017.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Vega United Methodist Church. Private burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Vega. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers at Vega, 110 Main St.

Marvin was born Feb. 5, 1934, in Dimmitt to H.L. Axe and Dovie Maurine Sullinger Axe. He went to school in Jumbo and Dimmitt, where he was active in sports and FFA. In 1952, they won the State Basketball Championship in Class 1A and 2A with Coach John Blaine.

Marvin married the love of his life, Janie Jennings, on April 27, 1954, in Canyon. He is being laid to rest on their 63rd anniversary.

Marvin served in the Army from 1954 to 1956. He was a long-time farmer and rancher in Castro and Oldham counties. Marvin was also employed with Citation Oil and Gas.

Marvin was instrumental in establishing Oldham County Farm and Ranch Museum.
He served in numerous positions in many organizations including ASCS, Oldham County Country Club, Vega Independent School District school board, as an Oldham County commissioner, commander of American Legion Post 168 and Vega Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Services.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John Axe; and a grandson, Randall Artho.

Survivors include his wife, Janie Axe, of the home; his daughters, Donna and Verlon Duggan of Lone Grove, Okla., Karen and Harold Artho of Umbarger, Sherri and Bruce Hartman of Canyon and Terri and Bret Richardson of Bushland; a sister, Zelda and husband Gayland Anderson of Lubbock; a brother, Dr. Jim and Suzanne Axe of Lubbock; a sister-in-law, June Cleavinger; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Duggan, James Duggan and wife Ashton, D'Ann Artho Johnson and husband Matt, Dustin Artho and wife Chelcie, Katy Richardson Roach and husband Randall, Rusty Hartman and April Artho; and eight great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Vega Volunteer EMS, P.O. Box 530, Vega, TX 79092; BSA Hospice of the Southwest, 5211 S.W. Ninth Ave., Suite 100, Amarillo, TX 79106; or a favorite charity.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home in Amarillo.
