DROWNDED
Sad Fate of J. D. Blitch of This City
While Out in a Fishing Boat at Naples He Was Tossed into the Ocean and Drowned

Joseph Dudley Blitch of this city met with an untimely and unfortunate death at Naples in Santa Barbara county late yesterday afternoon and his wife and fourteen year old son residing in the Steinbeck cottage on Chorro street are grief stricken over their great loss.

As near as could be learned last evening, Mr. Blitch was out on the ocean in a fishing boat, when the craft turned over and throwing him into the water. He was finally rescued from the waves, but not until life was almost, if not entirely, extinct. For two hours efforts were made to resuscitate him, but proved futile and the sad news was sent to the wife of the dead man in this city.

J. D. Blitch was well known in this city. He and his estimable wife had many friends. For a year or more, Mr. Blitch was the Agent for the Southern Pacific Company at Cuesta. Several months ago he accepted the position of agent and operator at Naples in Santa Barbara county.

He was a trusted employee of the company and well liked by all the men in the big corporation who knew him. Not long ago he made a trip to Alaska.

Deceased was aged about 37 years. He leaves a wife and son both of whom have the sympathy of the entire community in their time of great sorrow. The remains will be brought to this city.

Additional particulars have been received by Rev. S. E. Blitch of the death of J. D. Blitch who was drowned in the Pacific Ocean a few weeks ago, near Los Angeles, Calif. He was near the shore with a friend in a boat; the boat was small and his friend could not swim, while Blitch was a good swimmer. Both caught to the boat after it capsized, and Blitch told his friend to hold on, and he would go ashore and get help. His friend was very much frightened and Blitch swam away and called back, "Hold on, Ned, until I get help." The breakers were strong and something in the water struck Mr. Blitch on the head, and he was washed ashore dead. Many others were on the beach, and they saved the friend.
