Mr. Bittinger was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., then was raised in Massachusetts. He then moved to Washington, D.C., where he graduated from Western High School in Georgetown. He also graduated from the University of Maryland and received his master's degree from Harvard Graduate School of Business which was founded by his uncle, Edwin Gay. He was a retired real estate land developer in Northern Virginia after 25 years. He was a member of the McLean Post of the American Legion. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Smith Bittinger; a daughter, Mary Gay Jordan of Virginia Beach; three sons, Frank L. Bittinger of Colorado Springs, Colo., Charles "Chuck" Bittinger, III of Norfolk and John W. Bittinger of Lovingston, Va.; a sister, Dr. Isabel Bittinger of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a brother, Francis G. Bittinger of Washington, D.C.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Cox Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
