Janet W. Almand, 86, of Anacortes, WA passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on January 8, 1931 in Oakland, CA; the daughter of Robert and Helen (Crane) Whittaker. Janet attended Acalanes High School in Lafayette CA and graduated with an AA degree from Vallejo Junior College (currently known as Solano Community College).

Her working career started with Pentagon in Washington DC and ended for a time at Naval Supply in Oakland, CA when she was struck with polio. After her rehabilitation, she resumed her career with the Solano City as a medical secretary in a southern California hospital. She retired in 1967.

Janet met and married her late husband George in 1968. They lived in Morro Bay California for 18 years. She enjoyed flying in George’s private aircraft and fishing in Morro Bay in their boat. Together they travelled in their motorhome, built by George from a passenger bus, visiting Washington State many times. In 1989, they bought a home in Anacortes, Washington and moved in early 1991.

George and Janet loved their home, family, friends, church and City of Anacortes. They particularly enjoyed their Pinochle tournaments and playing music at the Senior Center. Her favorite Gospel hymns are: Great is Thy Faithfulness; I’ll fly away; He hideth my Soul and It’s well with my soul.

Janet is preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Barbara, Shirley and Nancy; brothers: Austin and Jerry and husband: George. She is survived by her sons: Michael and Jeffrey Swink; Step-children: Michael Almand and Patricia Almand (Dave Billick); Grandchildren: Jessica, Melissa and Alex Swink; sister-in-law: Peggy Whittaker; and cousin: Ruth Curfinan

A Graveside Service will be held 12 Noon on Friday April 28, at Fernhill Cemetery, followed by a Memorial Service 1 p.m. at Family Life Assembly of God Church, both in Anacortes. A reception will follow. Memorials may be made in Janet’s name to: Anacortes Family Life Assembly of God Church, Anacortes Senior Center or take someone out to lunch.
