Mildred was not actually originally named "Mildred" at birth. Her original given name was "Mildreth," and over time, she gradually began to use the name Mildred.
She was born to my 2nd great-grandfather, Oliver SAUNDERS ( a Civil War veteran), and his second wife, Carrie B. FRYE (a school teacher). Mildred had an older brother named Gifford Frye SAUNDERS, but I have so far been unsuccessful in tracing him genealogically.
Sadly, the two children were made orphans when their father died in 1910, and his death was followed shortly thereafter by their mother's in 1917. They lived in a succession of foster homes, and ultimately were sent to Saint Emma's College and St. Francis Desales Institute, in Rock Castle, VA, respectively.
